I Saw Micah Kissing…
I was sitting on the couch with Elliot and Micah was busy playing. I got up to walk into the kitchen to grab something to eat, and all of the sudden, I heard this noise. It kind of sounded like kissing, but I thought it could have been sucking, too. I walked back to the living room, peeked around the corner, and there was Micah, his hands firmly grasping his Elmo doll and holding it nose-to-nose in front of his face, kissing Elmo squarely on his mouth. I just about died – it has to be one of the cutest things I’ve ever seen! I asked Micah if he was giving Elmo kisses, and he smiled at me before he resumed kissing and hugging Elmo. Micah spent the better part of the next 20 minutes kissing Elmo. It’s official…Micah is in love with Elmo, and I can’t say I heard Elmo complaining.
In other news, Micah is 15 months old today!! I can’t imagine where the time has gone. Micah is running now, not just walking. He climbs into everything (and is especially fond of standing in tupperware containers). I wish I could grab a picture of that, but he just doesn’t sit still long enough. He loves to play his kazoo, and he now has 6 teeth all broken through (and it looks like another 2-4 on the way). He recently discovered his long eyelashes – sometimes he just sits there and yanks on them. It makes me laugh – I can’t imagine that it doesn’t drive him nuts.
Micah has been getting picky about eating the last week or so – I’m not sure if it is a phase or because of the teething. Some days, we can barely get him to eat anything at all, and other days he’ll eat a ton of food. We’ve also noticed that he is refusing to eat several “reliable” favorites – like bananas. He will still eat the freeze dried bananas, so it may just be a texture/teething thing. He still loves oranges, peaches, apple sauce, strawberries and grapes. We have been working on expanding Micah’s food horizons – he now eats peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, cream cheese and jelly, and cream cheese and olives. We’ve been trying to give him more lunch meats/deli slices, and he seems to love fish sticks. I have not been experimenting as much as I planned with chicken (he is kind of hit or miss about eating that). We did try giving him sweet and sour meatballs, and he seemed to like it, but he has been a little less willing to eat melted cheese sandwiches and pizza this week, but cheese sticks are at the top of the list. He also loves crackers – Wheat Thins, Cheez-Its, graham crackers, etc. We still haven’t tried the mashed potato croquettes or risotto cakes, but we have the ingredients ready to go.
Micah is just over 20 lbs now (still a tiny little thing) but I think he is quite tall (considering his weight) – perhaps 33 inches or more! We have our 15 month checkup on Tuesday, so I’ll have the official stats then. I think he will get his MMR vaccine at this visit, and perhaps chicken pox as well (we did not give him the chicken pox vaccine last time). I have read in some places that the chicken pox vaccine is not safe to give to anyone in a household with a pregnant woman – I need to verify that before we make our decision, but if it is safe for me, we will likely give him that vaccine as well. My little guy is still only in the 12 month (or 6-12 month) size. We have several outfits in the 6-9 month size I have not completely pulled from his closet, but those are definitely starting to get a little short in the sleeves. There are a few things he can “get away” with wearing in the 12-18 month (or 18 month) size, but they are still pretty big on him. I have purchased him all 12-18 month (or 18 month) sized clothing for the summer – I think that should be the right size.
As for talking – Micah has a number of words, and he is beginning to mimic us more often now. He regularly says hi, bye, mama, dada (or dad), nuh-nuh (for the dog), night night, ball and bubble. He signs more, all done and milk, and he will say (on occasion) Elmo, Big Bird, bang, uh oh, and a few other words. He seems to understand a lot of language – he’ll bring me things when I say “bring that to mommy,” and he will go pick up certain toys that I mention by name. He is starting to know his body parts, but he does not always respond (sometimes he prefers to smile at me with an expression that says “Mommy, you need to learn that I do not perform on command.” He knows to clap and to wave in response to those words, and he likes to play the “belly drum.” He does know where his head and nose are, and I think he understands the word hand, too. He is so curious about everything – he inspects and investigates everything, and he is always trying to climb onto or into anything he can.
So, in honor of Micah’s 15 months, here are some pictures:

Blizzard of 2010 – Part 2
It was actually a fun evening (for being snowed-in). The Superbowl is also an anniversary of sorts for Elliot and me – we met at a Superbowl party in 2005. Micah was in his football pajamas in honor of the Superbowl, and we watched the game together. He LOVED the half-time show – he was definitely rocking out to The Who. He was very cute as he clapped and tried to sing. My mom was actually humming a song, and Micah kept trying to copy her. My mom and I gave him a bath before bed, and we brought him back downstairs to play for a bit before bed. As I brought him upstairs to go to sleep, my parents both said “night night” to him, and much to our surprise and pleasure, he responded by saying “night night” right back! We said it a few more times, and so did he – he now has a new word in his vocabulary!
The next morning (Monday), the power was restored to my parents’ house and we were able to return them home! The local government and schools were all closed, so there was not much going on anywhere in the area. Micah’s daycare was canceled, and we were trapped at home with no place to go. Elliot spent the day shoveling snow at my parents’ house, running errands and taking care of a few things. Unfortunately, power was still not restored to all the residents in the area, and very few of the side streets were plowed. The main roads were still a mess, and there was panic throughout the area as predictions for the next day’s snow storm were reaching 15-20 inches.
The snow began to fall again early on Tuesday morning. Once again, government and schools were closed, and the government requested that we stay off the roads for safety reasons. Micah’s class was canceled, and we were again stranded at home. By morning, the snow intensified to full blizzard conditions. The wind was high, and visibility was low. It was unsafe to be out on the roads, and even the plows were directed to stay off the roads. The main roads quickly became impassable. The snow continued until midnight, and we had another 15 inches of snow when all was said and done. What a mess!
Here are a few pictures of our house after the last round of snow. The garbage cans, car and fence are nearly buried.
We finally got plowed out this afternoon, and I actually left the house for the first time in a week! Okay – I just took my dog to my parents’ house since we are going out of town in the morning, but that counts, right?
Micah has recently discovered he much prefers to use a fork when he eats:
During the snow, Micah made a VERY important discovery – the Kazoo! We were sitting in the living room and Micah was wandering around the house in circles. We had a kazoo as a party favor that I had tucked away, and Micah found it and started to play it. I heard the noise and it took me a moment to figure out what it was. I was surprised that he figured out how to play it all on his own! I did manage to get some video of it.
Micah has 2 more teeth breaking through on top. He has been a bit cranky. Luckily, he has recently discovered a love for ice cubes (he reaches into the freezer and helps himself every chance he gets) and he finally took a popsicle (homemade – from applesauce), so these new things definitely help with the teething.
And for good measure, here are pictures of Micah with his new favorite toys:
Yes, that is right, our “tupperware” cabinet. It is the one cabinet we have not safety locked, and he spends his days emptying out all the containers and making a great big mess. As you can see, he has a ton of fun wreaking havoc.
He has also developed a new bad habit – he bites when he gets frustrated or upset. I’m not sure what to do about that – I’ve been trying to tell him no and show him how to ask for what he wants. I sure hope this is just a stage that will disappear when his vocabulary increases.
Twoey’s 20 week OB appointment and ultrasound
Yesterday was my 20 week OB appointment. Although they made us wait 1 1/2 hours to see the midwife, it was a rather uneventful appointment. We listened to (and recorded) Twoey’s heartbeat (it was in the 160s).
Skeleton face:
Finally, they did measure my cervical length. It dropped to 3.5 cms, which is still considered “safe” at this point in the pregnancy, however, it is unusual to lose about 1 cm of cervical length over the course of a month at only 20 weeks. After I had my initial bout of early labor with Micah at 28 weeks, my cervix shrunk from 4.6 down to 3.8 cms at 28 weeks, and they were concerned then. I think the biggest worry at this point is that I’m losing the “cushion” – if I develop contractions again, my cervix is already shrinking and it may be harder to stave off labor and keep me pregnant. I have to go back in 2 weeks for a cervical length check. If it continues to shrink, we may have to get a bit more aggressive with either medications or bedrest. As long as my cervix stays above 2.6 for now, they will keep me up and moving around, so for right now, everything is okay.
Last night, Micah used a fork for the first time!! We were at my parents’ house for another night of shiva, eating dinner. Micah was not particularly interested in the cheese or the bagels or the tuna fish, so I made him a veggie burger. He spotted my fork, and he made it quite clear he wanted it. I tried stabbing a piece of veggie burger with the fork and feeding it to him. He quickly stole the fork from me…and went about feeding himself with a fork! I was amazed that he could handle it so well – it never dawned on me to give it a try. He needed a bit of help getting the pieces onto the fork, but he ate the entire veggie burger that way. Once again, tonight at dinner, Micah wanted a fork. He ate two small turkey burgers with his fork – and this time, he was even able to stab the meat himself. Apparently, Micah loves to use a fork (something I find particularly humorous as his Uncle Jeremy STILL rarely uses a fork!
I am definitely due for a picture post – I have a ton of pictures and video of Micah to add to the blog – I’ll have to get to that this weekend while we are snowed in!
Disney…and the trip home
My presentations on Thursday went quite well. The sessions were fully attended, and we received a lot of positive feedback. I also had a series of great meetings with some clients. I received confirmation of a contract renewal, and worked out the details for a new contract with an old client.
As I am sure I have now said hundreds of times, I cannot believe how much Micah has grown and changed over the past year. All week, I kept remembering how little Micah was his first trip to Orlando last year, and I was amazed at how…BIG…he seemed this year. On Thursday evening, we took Micah to Downtown Disney. I have to say, dinner with a toddler was a bit more challenging than dinner with a newborn last year. Once again, we got a bit of a late start – we went to a reception at 5:30, and it was 7:00 pm before we made it to the restaurant. By that point, Micah was fidgety and hungry. There was butcher paper on the table, so I gave Micah a crayon and let him play a bit. My little boy was coloring!! Well, when he wasn’t trying to eat the crayons. Micah was not being so cooperative at dinner – he didn’t want to sit still, and he wanted to practice walking. The waiter gave him a plastic cup of water with a straw, and he wanted to play with the cup and the straw the entire time. Naturally, he managed to figure out how to douse himself with the water, and screamed bloody murder any time I tried to confiscate his new “toy.”
Last year, Micah slept through dinner…well, he actually slept through the entire visit to Downtown Disney. We joked about him being a traveling gnome – he was sound asleep and we were taking him out of his stroller and snapping photos of him everywhere – at Lego Land, trying on hats, and at the candy store. By far, this was my favorite photo of Micah:
Elliot held him up next to the Lego bulldog while he slept. The bulldog was maybe 18-22 inches off the ground, and we were laughing at how little Micah seemed next to the bulldog. This year, we couldn’t resist revisiting that spot and trying to re-create the moment. Can you believe the difference?
Funny – this year, the bulldog looks so tiny, and Micah looks like a giant!!
On Friday, we spent the afternoon in the Magic Kingdom. We drove over to the parking area and took the monorail over to the Magic Kingdom. Micah is FULL of energy and just does not like to sit still. He is content in his stroller if we are moving, but he hates to be on line, and he really hates when we hold him and prevent him from wandering around on his own. Upon arrival, we picked up our tickets and headed straight down Main Street. Micah seemed to enjoy the music and he LOVED the balloons.
We decided to start off in Fantasyland. Our first ride of the day was “It’s a Small World.” The line was relatively short – maybe 5-7 minutes long, but Micah was pretty unhappy that we were keeping him so confined. When we first climbed into the ride, he was angry and screaming. As the safety bar pulled down, he was squirming and crying. I turned to Elliot and said “if this does not go well, I think we’ll be heading back to the hotel.” As the car moved forward, Micah got a bit quieter, and when we entered the first room and heard the song “It’s a Small World” from all the moving people, Micah’s face lit up and he started to clap!! It was the sweetest thing I have seen. He was enthralled the entire ride!! He smiled, he clapped, he danced – our first ride was a complete success!!
After “It’s a Small World,” we picked up a fast pass for Peter Pan’s flight, then immediately hopped on the carousel. Once again, Micah was not so thrilled while we waited, but after the horses started moving, he was all smiles. We took a quick spin on Snow White – he was calm and content, but not so much interested in clapping. Then, Elliot decided to take Micah on the dumbo ride. At this point, I was having some issues with morning sickness, so I decided to sit this one out. This ride might have been the worst decision we made all day. Elliot ended up waiting in line about 40 minutes, and Micah was cranking and complaining the entire time! Once the dumbos took off, he was back to smiling. Immediately after the ride, we gave Micah a quick snack and decided to head on over to Frontierland to see the Country Bear Jamboree. We arrived just as the show started, so we had about 20 minutes to pass. We ran into the food shop and grabbed a veggie burger for the three of us to share, then made it back to the Country Bear Jamboree just in the nick of time. Once again, Micah was cranky about being held on my lap…until the lights went down and the bears started talking and singing. He was back to smiling and clapping for the entire show!
After the Country Bear Jamboree, we headed to Adventureland and took a ride on the Jungle Cruise. That has to be one of the cheesiest rides ever! Micah did seem to enjoy the animals, and he was even pointing at different things that caught his eye. We decided to ride on Pirates of the Caribbean before heading back to Fantasyland to use our fast passes on Peter Pan’s flight. By the end of the day, Micah was clearly exhausted, but he seemed to have an amazing time. There were only a few other rides and shows I think he could have enjoyed at Disney, but we definitely felt that we took full advantage of those tickets. I am certain that Micah will not remember this trip, but I think it was a great learning experience for him and he seemed to have a wonderful day. Most of all, seeing him light up and enjoy the rides brought a bit of joy to an otherwise sad day for me.
That night, a friend of mine drove up to Orlando to attend my conference! While we waited for her to arrive, we stopped off at a wine and cheese party at one of the other villas. My friend arrived around 7:00 pm, and was able to see Micah in person. We went out for dinner together and caught up. After the crazy day Micah had at the Magic Kingdom, he just needed to go to sleep, so Elliot graciously volunteered to stay behind and put him to bed while I went out. I loved having the time to get out and catch up with a friend.
Saturday morning, I woke up and gave my final presentation. Another successful session, and I received more good news – apparently, the program in the Virgin Islands was thrilled with my sessions and wants to bring me out to provide my assistance there! Can I tell you how excited I am about the opportunity to go to the Virgin Islands? We might also have to visit Puerto Rico on the way out. Usually, I end up going to Wichita or Minneapolis or Podunk, USA – this trip promises to be far more exciting! My mother has already volunteered to come along as a “Grananny.”
After my presentation, I spent a bit more time in the exhibit hall, said my goodbyes, and then we headed out nice and early to the airport. On the way there, my mom called to tell me that another friend of hers was stuck in Palm Beach because of the weather issues and flight cancellations. We checked on our flight…only to discover it was canceled! I was panicking – we needed to be back so that I could get to my grandmother’s funeral, and Elliot had a group of Red Cross delegates he was coordinating for departure to Haiti. We spent the next few hours trying to switch our flights, change airlines, etc. During that time, my mom decided to postpone the funeral a day – the snow was far worse than had been anticipated. Ultimately, we finally did get on a flight home at 5:20 pm. Poor, Micah – it was quite a long day for him. We were lucky enough (again) to have a seat for him on the airplane. But, he just did not want to sit still. Elliot put on an Elmo DVD to keep him entertained, but it was a tough flight back. We finally landed around 7:20 and rushed to the car. Micah fell asleep on the way home, and transferred easily into his crib and slept through the night.
This morning, Elliot woke up early to help the Red Cross delegation leave for Haiti. I made Micah pumpkin pancakes for breakfast, and we had a fun morning together. This afternoon, we took Micah to a friend’s house for a birthday party. He had a good time playing this afternoon, and he is just so sweet!
Tomorrow, I have to leave quite early to drive to Pennsylvania for my grandmother’s funeral. We decided that Elliot and Micah would stay behind – the ride is just too difficult to make in one day with a toddler. I’m dreading tomorrow and saying goodbye, but I am so thankful that after everything, I made it back to be there with my family. I will post more pictures from Florida and a few other stories later in the week.
Turkey Burgers
One of my friends always seems to post recipes and demonstrations of the food she makes for her daughter, so this is my feeble first attempt to give it a try. Naturally, I forgot to take pictures of every step along the way, so it is quite light on the pictures. You’ll just have to rely on my recipe and description!!
This is the 2nd time I’ve made turkey burgers for Micah. I actually am a vegetarian, so I have no idea how these taste, but Micah seems to love them, and Elliot says they are delicious. You could make these as a family dinner sometime, but I like having them around on-hand in my freezer because they are inexpensive, healthy, and I can pop one in the microwave and heat it up as needed in just one minute! We find this recipe quite inexpensive to make, and I think it is simple, too. We always use organic ingredients (meats and all the veggies) and in our area, we have been finding that Trader Joe’s has some of the best prices for organic food, especially the meats. We have also had success with the “house” brand organics at the leading grocery store chains.
Ingredients:
1 lb ground turkey
1/2 vidalia onion, finely diced
1-2 tsps minced garlic
1 egg
1/3 c. bread crumbs
1/2 c. grated zucchini (can substitute other veggies – I did it once with spinach, and I bet you could use pureed baby food, too, and I’m thinking about trying it with some tomatoes)
Take the ground turkey and place in a mixing bowl. Finely dice about 1/2 a vidalia onion. For the little babies, it is important to really make sure you have a fine dice – you want the onion to sort of disappear into the burger and just slide down their throat. I picked vidalia onions because they have a sweet flavor – they add some spice without being too strong. You could use a regular yellow onion instead, but use cautiously!!
Next, add about 1-2 tsps of minced garlic – Micah definitely likes the flavor, and you can go heavier as your baby develops a taste for spices. I’m lazy and buy my garlic pre-diced, but you could probably just use a garlic press with 1 or 2 cloves of garlic, or hand mince a clove or two. Feel free to add other seasonings to taste – whatever flavors you think will appeal to you and your baby! I have one friend that puts sage, basil and thyme into everything.
The next step is to prepare and shred the zucchini. The easiest way to prepare zucchini is to slice it in half, the long way:
Then, you take a spoon, and scrape out the seeds/pulp in the center. The zucchini will have a half-moon shape (or a c-shape) when you are done scraping. I scrape out the seeds/pulp because the texture is really not pleasant, and it does not add much flavor.
Next, grate the zucchini into the bowl. It may only take 1/2 a zucchini to get about 1/2 cup. You can feel free to add more or less zucchini as you see fit, and you can always substitute different vegetables. I have also made these with spinach instead of the zucchini, but any kind of squash, pumpkin or carrots or even broccoli could work just fine. Feel free to be creative! I am certain you could put pureed baby food in here, too (or instead of the grated vegetables). I like to grate the veggies because Micah really enjoys the textures right now. Adding the veggies is an easy way to sneak in some additional nutrition, especially now that Micah is getting picky about eating vegetables directly.
At this point, I add about 1/3 c bread crumbs and 1 egg. I find that the egg and bread crumbs help bind everything together and give it a good texture, but you can certainly try to leave it all out. I was told that after 8 months, we were allowed to give Micah things that contained egg whites, but we couldn’t give him a straight egg white. I’m not sure why that matters, but pancakes and bread with eggs and burgers with eggs mixed in were all on the “okay” list. If you are nervous about using the whites, you could just put in the yolk. Micah was probably at least 9 months old before we were really giving him protein on a regular basis, but turkey burgers and hamburgers were a great texture for him as we started introducing meats and “table” food instead of baby food.
I put it on one of those burger pans – with the drip pan underneath and the slotted top. You can make the burger any size you feel appropriate. The first time, I divided the mix up into 16 burgers, but this last time, I only made 12. I am thinking that as Micah eats more, next time around, I may only make 8-10. I bake them in the oven at 350 for about 30 minutes or so. It is a good idea to flip them as they start to brown on one side. You can usually tell they are ready by splitting one in half to be sure they are cooked all the way through. If you are at all nervous, you can always take a meat thermometer, and poultry is considered “cooked” when it hits around 160-165. The meat will continue to cook for a few minutes after you remove it from the oven, so once it clears 160, it is good to go.
Here is what mine look like after they are cooked:
I then let them cool, then individually wrap and freeze them. You can freeze them on a cookie sheet and put them in a plastic bag once they are frozen – that way they won’t all stick together. I take them out one at a time when I want to give one to Micah, and they heat up in about 1 minute in the microwave. Any longer than that, they get too hot and we have to cool them down before we can feed him, but 1 minute makes them warm all the way through, and not hot.
Lately, Micah has gotten a bit picky, so he doesn’t always like to eat these plain. Tonight, we discovered that a bit of marinara sauce on top makes them even more delicious – as far as Micah is concerned. These turkey burgers have been great for us – we can almost always count on him gobbling them up whenever we serve one, and it comes complete with some built-in veggies. It feels like a very complete meal.
New Year’s 2010
We had an amazing New Year’s this year! First off, we actually got to go OUT. We were starting to feel a bit like losers…we didn’t even get any invitations to cool parties (that we probably couldn’t attend anyway since babysitters on New Year’s Eve are no small feat). Luckily, a few days beforehand, we got a call from some our friends Niki and Eric, inviting us to hang out. We were thrilled! We headed over there around 6 pm, fed the kids dinner (and ate pizza) then just hung out and played with the kids. We intended to play with the Wii and maybe try some board games, but that never quite happened. Around 8:30, we tried to put Micah to sleep in a pack’n’play. Unfortunately, Micah had other plans, and all he wanted to do was come out and play. By 9, they were putting their kids down, but Micah’s crying kept waking their kids and bringing their older son down to check on the baby. By 10:00, we gave up trying to put Micah to sleep, and tried to let him run off the remaining energy. By 11:00, we realized he was still going strong. We briefly debated getting in the car and driving home to put him to bed, but we decided that we might as well just let it be for one night.
We were watching Micah, watching tv, talking, and catching up, and it really was a nice evening. As we started to watch the New Year’s festivities on tv, we could not believe Micah was going strong. The clock hit 11:30…11:45…11:50…at 11:53, I joked with DH that Micah would fall asleep just before the ball dropped. We took this picture of him to show our wide awake crazy baby:
New Year’s Day, we decided to take him up to visit my grandmother to celebrate her 97th birthday. We brought her a cake, and the two of them were able to spend some quality time together. She suffers from dementia, so I’m not exactly certain she knew who he was, but she seemed to think he was beautiful, and he made all of the residents smile. I just like knowing that my Grammy has had the opportunity to spend some time with him, and I’ll forever be able to hold those memories.
Trip to NJ
As we had been planning, we decided to head to New Jersey to celebrate Micah’s birthday, Chanukah, Elliot’s brother Dan’s birthday, and his nephew Brian’s birthday with his family. On December 29th, we packed up and took off on our trip. Not surprisingly, traffic was a bit heavy, and we left later than originally planned.
I was driving, but the morning sickness was making the drive challenging for me. Micah was actually wide awake for the first 1 1/2 hours of the trip (we were hoping he would fall asleep quickly and nap for most of the trip). Luckily he was in a good mood, playing with his toys and enjoying the Elmo CD playing in the car.
About 1 hour or so into the trip, Micah started playing his new “game.” You see, he thinks it is funny to stick his fingers so far down into his throat that it makes him gag. It is an awful sound (especially for someone like me who already feels nauseated), and I just think it is a terrible thing to do! He sticks his fingers down his throat, he gags, and then he laughs and does it again. I kept telling him no and told him to stop, but that just seemed to make him want to do it more. I tried to ask Elliot to give him some food or a bottle or another toy to distract him, but no such luck. I actually said to Elliot that if we didn’t get him to stop, he would make himself throw up. No sooner than I said that…yup, you guessed it, Micah puked all over himself. And started laughing. He thought it was hysterical! All I could think about was the smell and wanting to throw up myself.
We pulled over to the side of the road in the middle of nowhere on the highway. Elliot did the best he could to wipe him down, but we decided in the cold weather and on the side of the road, it was too difficult to change Micah. So…we got back on the road. Micah quickly fell asleep asleep after this, but I kept smelling vomit the entire trip.
Micah woke up near a rest stop about 30 miles from our destination. We decided to pull over, change his diaper and clothing and give him a snack. He was really cooperative and enjoyed his break, but he was very unhappy to be returned to the car. The last part of the trip was awful – Micah was crying and the traffic was terrible.
We finally arrived around 5:30 pm. I was still so sick from the traveling that I immediately threw up. Micah spent some time with his cousins Melissa, Brian and Stephanie and Aunt Jodi and Uncle Steven while I did my best to recover (and popped another Zofran). We headed out to dinner to celebrate Brian’s birthday at this cute little restaurant, but it was FREEZING cold there! We had these incredible potato chips (made fresh), but I couldn’t get Micah to eat the macaroni and cheese or any other food. Micah started to melt down towards the end of dinner, so we headed back to the house and quickly put him down to sleep. He was not thrilled to be sleeping in a new environment, unfortunately, so it took him a while to fall asleep – he needed Mommy to stay in the room and hold his hand for a while.
Elliot and I stayed awake until about 2:45 talking to our nieces and nephew. We finally went up to bed, got settled in, and I even got into bed without waking Micah who was sound asleep in the pack ‘n play next to the bed. Until Elliot made a ton of noise in the hallway and woke him up!! Micah was crying and would not stop, so I had to pull him into bed with us. Naturally, Elliot passed out a few minutes later, and I was awake for the next 1 1/2 hrs with a very perky Micah who wanted nothing more than to cuddle with Mommy and bounce on the bed. Finally, Micah fell asleep around 4:30. I woke Elliot up to help me move Micah back to the pack ‘n play so I could get some sleep.
Around 6:00 am, the room started to get very hot. By 7:00, it was almost unbearable, and Micah woke up crying. I knew we were in for a long day!! We opened up the door to the bedroom and got Micah’s bottle. He drank his milk and fell asleep again for another hour. By 9:00, I took him downstairs and gave him breakfast. I think he threw most of it on the floor, but he was having fun. After breakfast, he kept using the chair as a “walker” and he made circles around the first floor. We managed to get him down for a nap, and he woke up in time for the rest of the family to start arriving.
Daniel, Jody and Ethan arrived first. The kids all played together while we waited for their grandparents to arrive. We also learned that Micah is quite musical – he was enjoying playing the piano with his cousin Brian. He was actually pretty good. I do think he has a musical sense – he loves to bang on things like drums, and in music class, he loves to dance and shake the egg shakers to the music, and he loves both real pianos and his toy piano. Grandma Roberta and Poppy Ira arrived around 1:00, and we had a wonderful lunch of latkes. We exchanged gifts and then had birthday cake, and just had a lovely day together.
Most of the family left by 4:00. We stayed a few hours longer to feed Micah dinner. We put him to sleep in the car around 7:30, and we had an easy ride home (except for my nausea). We stopped to pick up the dog, then went straight back to our house. It was a very nice visit!
Christmas Morning
Every year, Elliot and I volunteer together at the Original Pancake House in Bethesda on Christmas morning, which serves hot breakfast to the homeless. Elliot spends his time cooking, and I have taken charge of the “gift” table – we give out a bag of toiletries to every person who comes in, along with warm clothing – gloves, hats, jackets when we have them, sweaters, sweatshirts, thermal socks. Through lots of hard work, Elliot and I managed to get the toiletries together and bagged for over 400 people. I sit on the board of a youth group, and the board there really helped us gather some supplies, and one of the chapters bagged about 150 or more bags for us. Elliot managed to get a vendor to provide us with some extra toiletries that were unclaimed from FEMA, and my cousin, who works at a Marriott hotel, managed to get us 300 bars of soap and 300 shampoos. We also used cash to buy gloves, socks, and sweatshirts, and we got about 6 boxes of sweatshirts and jackets donated from a vendor. Here were all the goodies Elliot & I brought that morning:
We distributed EVERYTHING, and the recipients were so thankful. It was a fantastic way to spend our Christmas morning.
The Blizzard and Morning Sickness
On December 18, two major storms hit me simultaneously – the Blizzard of 2009 and morning sickness. I have to say, it has been a crazy week. After Micah’s birthday party tanked, he stayed sick all week. We did a little celebration at home in honor of his birthday, but then I actually left for Kansas for work from December 15-16. I flew home late on the 16th, not feeling so hot. I thought it was just my susceptibility to motion sickness while pregnant – the flight back did not make me feel too well. We woke up early on the 17th to make our doctor’s appointment to have Micah’s skull examined, and then had an insanely crazy day. I threw up on and off all day, and knew I was in for another round of morning sickness. I had a really rough night on Thursday (and Micah was not sleeping great all week because his cough kept waking him up), and I woke up early on Friday feeling sick.
That should have been my clue I was in for trouble. We were preparing for the blizzard and trying to get a whole bunch of things done. I started throwing up early that morning, and couldn’t keep anything down. I tried eating, I tried not eating. I tried drinking water, I tried sleeping. Every couple of hours, I was throwing up again. They were having a potluck party at Micah’s daycare at 5:00 pm, and I had to make something for the event. Luckily, we had a ton of leftover cupcakes from the birthday party that wasn’t, so I was able to quickly ice those and bring them with us. I took a phenergan in the afternoon, hoping it would help with the nausea.
At Micah’s daycare, I just felt worse and worse. I had to excuse myself to go throw up, and then I just did not think I would be able to function any more. We finally went home, and it just got worse. I threw up a few more times, and I knew I had nothing left in my system. I tried lying down while Elliot took Micah out to services, but that didn’t help either. I threw up a few more times before they made it home. Elliot went upstairs to put Micah to bed, and he disappeared for a few more hours. I was very unhappy with him – I was just miserable as I was throwing up nonstop for the next few hours. He finally made it downstairs (my mom called and he brought me the phone), and he decided to run out before the weather was awful and pick up my phenergan. He disappeared for far too long, and I was a mess. When he finally came back, I took another pill…and promptly threw it up. We called the midwives, and they said that they’d normally tell me to go to the hospital, but the roads were already too dangerous to drive.
We spent the next few hours trying to get enough medicine in me and get creative about ways to make me keep it down. Finally, around 1:00 in the morning I stopped throwing up. I tried drinking water around 4:00 am, but threw that up. Saturday, the snow was going strong all day, so I just pretty much lay low, took my pills, and couldn’t eat or drink anything. On Sunday, we called the midwives again, and they called in a prescription for Zofran. Sunday was actually a miserable day for me. Elliot went down to volunteer at Martha’s Table where we normally cook and serve hot meals the Sunday before Christmas, but I was too sick to go and we had no babysitter for Micah because of the weather. Elliot went anyway, and left me home, by myself, to take care of an infant while I was throwing up. It was an AWFUL day. At least he picked up the prescription for Zofran on the way home, but he was gone from 11-6. I was not a happy camper. Finally, a few hours after I took the 2 Zofran, I started feeling some better. By 10:00 pm, I was able to drink water!! I quickly graduated to vegetable broth, and for breakfast on Monday morning, I got quite bold and ate rice. I managed to keep most everything down, but it has been miserable. Not exactly what I had in mind.
Despite my complete misery, we did manage to take Micah out for some fun in the snow. I took him out by myself on Sunday (for about 10 minutes). Poor little guy – I think it took us 30 minutes to get ready, and he really didn’t feel like staying and playing too long! Here are our snow pictures:
