Yes, today is another toilet-hugging day. I’m NOT feeling well this afternoon. To top it all off, I got a call from my OB – apparently, I have a urinary tract infection, too. I’m glad they caught it, but at the same time, I was there on Tuesday morning – you’d think they would have called me with the results before FRIDAY!!
Let’s Dish!
So, today was actually a really good day. Tonight, Heather and I made an appointment to go to Let’s Dish. For those of you who don’t know about Let’s Dish, it is a place you go to prep meals that you store in the freezer and then heat up when needed. The food is all fresh – they have it prepped for you, and recipes all written out, and all you have to do is assemble, mix and wrap.
We had a blast! We made a salmon dish to share, and I made a cheesey black bean enchilada dish, and we also shared a calzone dish. I picked up a few side dishes as well, and bought some molten chocolate cakes for dessert.
No puking today, so all in all, a good day!
Throwing up again
Today was not a good day. I started the morning off with far less nausea than I’ve had . . . until about 3:00 pm. Then, it all went bad, and I spent the afternoon hugging the toilet. Hello morning sickness . . . .
I’ve also been exhausted and just feeling crampy. Again – no complaints – I just hope this baby grows strong and healthy!
First OB appointment
Today I woke up excited for our first OB appointment . . . until I went to the bathroom and realized I was spotting. I became panicked, and I was sure I was going to miscarry. We got to the doctor’s office – and no one was there! Our appointment was at 8, they asked us to arrive at 7:45, and we were not seen until 8:50. I was LIVID – the doctor blamed the ultrasound tech, and the ultrasound tech blamed the doctor, but the bottom line was neither one of them showed up on time and we were forced to wait.
The ultrasound tech was horribly rude. I mentioned that I was worried about the spotting, and when she did the ultrasound, she hid the screen from us. When I asked her questions, she told me that she doesn’t share information. I was not pleased with this office at all. I asked her a simple question – was there a heartbeat – and she wouldn’t even answer me.
Luckily, it all turned out to be good news. The baby’s heartbeat was measured at 178, so doing quite well. I have to go back for another ultrasound with the rude lady in two weeks to monitor my ovary (it is currently enlarged), and then another appointment at 12 weeks. We also got a prescription to do a nuchal translucency scan to check for Down’s Syndrome. I’ll be setting that up soon!
Law School Reunion
This weekend, Elliot and I went to NY for my law school reunion! It was so amazing to see everyone again. I stayed with one of my best friends, Tami, who lives up in NY. The car ride up was tough – lots of nausea for me. On Saturday, we walked her daughter Abbi to dance class, then went for bagels. I thought I would be sick before I got any food in my system! About 2 hrs later, we picked up Abbi, and she was ready to eat lunch. Luckily, so was I! So, we went for pizza. Over lunch, Tami asked me about our plans for having children. . . . and I told her that we are expecting! I was so excited to share the news with her. We went shopping for some clothes for her at Ann Taylor Loft, then we went back to her place. She then dug out all of her maternity clothes and gave them to me – I hit PAYDIRT!! Her clothes are perfect, and it will be such a help to have all of them to wear.
That evening, I got ready for my reunion, but I felt absolutely huge – I was sure I was showing. I tried hiding all night behind a shawl, and luckily no one said anything. I’m sure they were thinking “wow, did she get HUGE since law school!” I was dying to tell everyone, but it just wasn’t the best timing. Anyway, I had an amazing time, although I was exhausted and cramping by the end of the night.
The next morning, we had arranged to meet all of Elliot’s family – first to celebrate his nephew Ethan’s birthday and second to share the news. We first met his parents along with Daniel, Jody and Ethan. When we shared the news, they said they hoped that was why we wanted to gather everyone together. They were thrilled for us, too.
That afternoon, we started back home, and stopped off to visit Elliot’s other brother – Steven and Jodi and their children Melissa, Brian and Stephanie. Again, it took Elliot about 1 hour to share the news, but then they said they could tell just by looking at me. Everyone was truly thrilled for us, and I think it was great to finally share the news! We went out to dinner before driving back home.
Morning Sickness
Yes, the morning sickness bug has hit full force this week. Mostly, I’ve just felt carsick all day, everyday. NOT a fun feeling, and I’m so far behind on my work, but after all of this time, I’m certainly not going to complain! I finally ended up puking for my first time yesterday – I actually felt better after I threw up. It is going to be a long journey, and I hope I’m one of the lucky ones with mild morning sickness that disappears magically at 12 weeks.
Mother’s Day
Today was my first Mother’s Day that I could kind of join in the celebration, too! It was so amazing to think this time next year I will be a mother. We all went over to my parents’ house (me, Elliot, Jeremy, Jen, and my two nieces). Elliot & I cooked brunch for everyone. We made omelettes, waffles, home fries – it was a fantastic meal. We also decided to share our good news with Jeremy and Jen.
This time, I decided to take a different approach from the cake. I bought a shirt for my dog (and I never put clothing on my dog!), and put the words “BIG SIS” on the back of it. I slipped it on the dog while we were making breakfast, then went into the other room where everyone was sitting with her. Jen, saw it first, and totally got it right away. Apparently, my brother was being dense . . . Jen had to explain the shirt to him! They were thrilled for us. I felt badly, because I had just seen Jen on Wednesday, and had kind of misled her about our efforts to get pregnant. Elliot had threatened me if I shared the news when he wasn’t there. Luckily, she forgave me!
The rest of the day was fantastic – we took my nieces to the park and they road the carousel and took a train ride. All in all, it was a perfect day.
Jumping the Gun . . . Maternity Clothes!
So, I know I am totally jumping the gun here, but my mother and I went shopping for maternity clothes today! Actually – I thoroughly enjoyed myself. Everything is elastic waisted, so it always fits, and you are supposed to look fat in it – I’ve never had such an easy time shopping for clothes in my life!! I really don’t need the maternity clothes yet, but many of my pants were feeling a little tight around the waist when I was sitting down (and the extra pressure on my enlarged ovary is really uncomfortable), and I really don’t have many casual pants that will fit me this summer, so I decided to go ahead and just buy a few things now. What I wanted to buy was a belly band – basically, an elastic band that fits around my waist and it will allow me to wear my regular pants with the button unbuttoned. I ended up buying far more than that!!
We decided to shop at Motherhood Maternity and Old Navy. In our mall, the Motherhood store is down an empty corridor, where there are no other stores. I joked with my mom about being afraid to go to the store because I would run into someone. So, we took a deep breath, and went to the store. NATURALLY, we ran smack into a friend of mine, Betsy, who is due in August!! My mom was quite creative – she put on a confused expression and said “I guess we got lost . . . this doesn’t look like the way to Old Navy. I hate shopping without Mickey – he is the only one of us with any mall sense!!” I have no idea if she bought our story, but we got directions to Old Navy and scurried off. I bought a few things at Old Navy, then we returned to Motherhood and bought even more.
Sharing the News!
Tonight we couldn’t wait any longer, so we decided to share the news with my parents! Okay – I’ll be honest – I couldn’t wait any longer. I called my mom this afternoon and told her we had just picked up her Mother’s Day gift and were so excited and wanted to give it to her. Since I love to make and decorate cakes, I decided it would be best to share the news with a cake.
Here is my cake:
I slowly brought it out of the container, and unveiled it. My mom looked at it and asked “is that a bathing suit? Are you sending us on another trip? 12-29-08 – are we leaving for vacation that day?” I couldn’t believe my parents didn’t understand! I think my mom even asked if I made the person in the bathing suit fat to make her feel better (she doesn’t realize that she isn’t even close to fat)!! Luckily, I had a bag of goodies for my mom, too – a pic of the u/s in a frame, a digital HPT that said pregnant, and a shirt that said Grandma on it. Once they started pulling those out, they realized what we were saying, and they were overjoyed! It was so nice to finally be able to share the news – it just made the whole thing seem a little more real.
And the Verdict is . . .
Today was our first ultrasound . . . and we have a beautiful little baby with a heartbeat! The baby measured right on target today with a heart rate of 107. It was fantastic – the ultrasound tech was so wonderful, and the doctor and my nurse were all in the room. My heart just swelled with joy. They took several pictures (the nurse put one in a frame for us). I just cannot believe it – Elliot & I were crying when we saw the heartbeat. We are going to my parents’ house tonight to share the news!
